Bathing, Dressing and Grooming Help in Miramar

The single most dangerous and most resented part of the day, handled by one familiar person at a pace that does not make anybody feel hurried.

A bathroom with a shower curtain beside a window

Where the falls actually happen

Wet tile, a step over the edge of a bath and a body that no longer corrects itself quickly make the bathroom the most hazardous room in the house by a wide margin. It is also the room families can least easily supervise themselves.

The work is not complicated. What it needs is somebody unhurried, who warms the room first, sets everything within reach, and does not make a performance of the parts the person can no longer manage.

That is a temperament rather than a technique, and it is not visible on a roster. It is visible across an hour in a front room, which is where every aide here is first met.

This is very rarely bought by itself. It sits inside a longer morning visit, which is the sensible way round — the aide is already in the house, the room is already warm, and the rest of the hour carries on afterwards.

Where a household wants only this, a short visit can be arranged, subject to the minimum visit length discussed on the first call.

What the visit covers

Prepared, done and tidied, usually inside forty minutes.

The room made ready first

Warm, dry underfoot, towels and clothes to hand before anybody undresses.

Shower, bath or a wash at the bedside

Whichever is genuinely safe that morning, not whichever was planned on paper.

Hair, shaving and teeth

Done properly rather than skipped because the shower ran long.

Dressing in chosen clothes

Laid out and picked by the person, with help only where fastenings have become difficult.

Skin looked over

Pressure points, dry patches and bruises, noticed while they are visible and written down.

The room left dry

Floor, mats and towels dealt with, which is half of preventing the next fall.

Not part of this visit

  • Wound care or dressings of any kind
  • Medicated washes or treatments applied on clinical instruction
  • Nail cutting where there is diabetes or poor circulation
  • Hoist transfers unless agreed and equipped in advance
  • Hairdressing or barbering beyond ordinary washing and shaving
  • Anything the person declines that morning

A familiar face makes this bearable

Which is the whole argument for meeting the aide before the first bathroom visit rather than after it.
