Personal Care at Home in Miramar

The hands-on half of home care: the shower, the dressing, the walk to the lavatory. It is the most private work in the house, which is exactly why you meet the person doing it beforehand.

Dignity is mostly a question of who

Nobody enjoys being helped to wash. Families spend a long time worrying about the task and comparatively little about the person, when the person is what makes the difference between an awkward ten minutes and an unbearable one.

An aide who has already sat in the room for an hour, been asked questions and been looked over is not a stranger on the first working morning. That alone changes how the first shower goes, and the first shower tends to set the pattern for everything after it.

Personal care is also where decline shows earliest. Skin, balance in a wet room, whether buttons are still manageable — none of it is visible from a telephone call, and all of it is visible here.

Personal care is almost always the second thing a household buys rather than the first. Companion hours go in, the notes start describing a slower shower and a struggle with buttons, and the conversation about hands-on help becomes an easy one to have.

Where it is urgent, it can start straight away — but the introduction still comes first, because the alternative is a stranger in the bathroom on day one.

What personal care covers

Hands-on help, done at the pace of the person rather than the diary.

Shower, bath or bed wash

Whatever the morning safely allows, with the room made ready before anybody undresses.

Dressing and undressing

Clothes laid out and chosen by the person, with help only at the parts that have become awkward.

Toilet and continence help

Discreet assistance, and the quiet routine around it that keeps the whole thing matter-of-fact.

Skin, hair, nails and teeth

Noticed and attended to while already undressed, which is when problems are findable.

Transfers in and out of bed

Chair, bed and bathroom, with proper technique rather than a pulled arm.

A note on how it went

Easier or harder than last time, and anything on the skin worth a second look.

Outside the scope of personal care

  • Any clinical or nursing procedure
  • Wound care of any kind
  • Handling or administering medication
  • Physiotherapy or prescribed exercise programmes
  • Lifting that properly needs two people or equipment we have not agreed
  • Anything the person actively refuses on the day

Meet them before they help you wash

It is a reasonable thing to insist on, and here it is simply how the work begins.
